“bring your teacher problems to solve, not mysteries to diagnose”
The lesson is the tip of the iceberg of your musical development
There is an art to taking a lessons
Your learning is your responsibility
What you’ll need
Before the Lesson
During the Lesson
What to do during the lesson?
o Be amazingly present
o Be professional
o “Yes and” - never be surprised
o Bring everything with you, outside the door a few minutes before.
o If you’re early, come in and watch the lesson before you
o Come in, immediately set up
o Let me know everything you are hoping to cover.
o I want to play first, not talk.
o Show me your attempt at solving your problems, instead of describing what they are.
o Engagement and questions, yes, but give me a chance to guide the lesson
o Play whole piece, not fragments at show tempo with other parts you haven’t seen
before.
